Financial Planning Strategies

Is Fiduciary Duty just a buzzword?

NO, not to us.

Your interests should come first.  When you hire a CFP® professional, you are hiring a trusted advisor who has committed to the CFP Board to put your interests first.  That’s because as part of their certification, a CFP® professional commits to acting as a fiduciary – which means always acting in your best interests when providing you with financial advice and financial planning services.

Why do most advisors call it “our” process?

We really aren’t sure.  The CFP Board has practice standards that help define the actual 7 Steps: The Financial Planning process.  While it does not set forth the only way to apply the Practice Standards there is room for CFP® Professionals to exercise professional judgement to satisfy them.   So, we believe that it is THE process.

Financial Planning Topics

  • Cash Flow & Budgeting

    Cash Flow & Budgeting

We’ll help you maximize your cash flow by closely looking at your income, expenses, savings, contributions and debt pay down rates. We’ll help you balance how you spend and save cash today vs. in the future so you can reach short-and long-term goals including how much and where to make savings contributions.

  • Goals-Based Budgeting

We will help you identify and articulate your financial goals. These may include things like buying a home, starting a family, relocating, investing in a rental property, retiring early, etc. We make sure these important objectives are top-of-mind with every financial decision you make.

  • Retirement Planning

You work hard, and you deserve financial independence. If you’re close to or currently in retirement, we help you create a sustainable withdrawal strategy to last your lifetime. If you’re further out from retirement, we help you maximize your savings in a tax-efficient way.

  • Investment Management

We’ll review your current investment portfolio and build a customized allocation designed to reach your financial goals. We will build your portfolio with all aspects of your financial plan in mind using low-cost, tax-efficient investments to maximize your returns.

  • Tax Planning

Our advice may include ways to minimize your current and future taxes. Within your investment portfolio, we will tax-loss harvest on an ongoing basis and position tax-efficient assets in your tax-free and tax deferred accounts to lower ongoing taxes. We will also review your tax return each year for accuracy and tax saving opportunities.

  • Employee Benefits

During your open enrollment, we’ll review your benefits at work to ensure you are optimizing your health insurance, life and disability plans, stock purchase plans, equity/deferred compensation, and cafeteria plan options including legal, commuting, fitness center and other fringe benefits.

  • Insurance

We’ll review your existing insurance policies including health, life, disability, umbrella, long-term care, property and casualty, etc. to ensure your coverages are adequate and cost-efficient. If additional or updated policies are recommended, we will work with insurance brokers to put the policies in place.

  • College Planning

We’ll estimate the cost of your kids’ or loved ones’ college education and design a plan around how much and in which account(s) to save in order to meet your collage funding goals. This may involve opening 529 or other college savings plans to build tax-free education savings.

  • Estate Planning

Together, we’ll review your current estate plan including documents such as your will, power(s) of attorney, trust documents, beneficiary designations, etc. We may recommend a qualified attorney in order to draft or update your estate planning documents or provide other specialized advice.

  • Debt Management

Our goal is to help you build your net worth which involves creating a plan for paying off debt such as student loans, credit card debt, auto loans, mortgage and other personal loans. This may involve discussing how to prioritize high-interest debt, student loan analysis, debt consolidation, mortgage refinancing, etc.

  • Charitable Giving

If community impact is important to you, we will help craft a customized portfolio and plan that aligns with your personal values.  We’ll make every effort to maximize your investment returns, tax returns, and impact on your community and world.

  • Professional Introductions

As a fiduciary, it is our obligation to inform you when our knowledge tops out and together seek specialized advice from other professionals. We may introduce you to trusted, specialized experts in our network such as attorneys, CPAs, insurance brokers and realtors.
